History

This marker in Oak Grove Cemetery honors Katharine Lee Bates (1859-1929), the Falmouth-born poet and educator who wrote the words to 'America the Beautiful.' She penned the poem in 1893 after a trip to the summit of Pikes Peak in Colorado, and it was later set to Samuel Ward's hymn tune 'Materna.' Bates was a professor of English literature at Wellesley College.
