The Story

The Elnathan Nye House (also known as the Solomon Nye House) at 33 Old Main Road in Falmouth is an 18th-century dwelling with a history of over 250 years, originally built around 1735 and evolving through additions including a mid-19th-century kitchen wing, an enclosed entry porch, and an early-20th-century office wing; it retains key early features such as a heavy timber frame, center chimney plan, 18th-century beehive ovens, original facade clapboards, plaster walls on riven lath, wide floorboards, and paneled woodwork. The property, which includes an accompanying barn and 1.55 acres with stone walls, is strongly associated with two of North Falmouth's important early families, the Nyes in the 18th century and the Crowells in the 19th century, and reflects themes of 18th-century settlement, long-term agricultural use, and early-20th-century summer tourism. It meets National Register Criterion A for its historical associations and Criterion C as a well-preserved example of evolving 18th-century architecture, with a period of significance extending from circa 1735 to 1952.
