History

The Benjamin Nye Homestead in East Sandwich traces to a house built about 1678 by Benjamin Nye, an early English settler who came to Sandwich in 1637 and built mills on the nearby pond in the 1660s. The property stayed in the Nye family for generations and, during the 18th and 19th centuries, the surrounding village included the Nye gristmill and a tavern with a stagecoach stop. The Nye Family Association acquired the homestead in 1962 and opened it as a museum in 1972. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.
