The Story

Nobska Point Light Station stands high on a rocky, treeless promontory east of the entrance to Woods Hole Harbor in Falmouth, at the strategic junction of Vineyard and Nantucket Sounds with Buzzards Bay. Dating mainly from an 1876 rebuilding, the complex is an intact example of a light station, comprising a 40-foot white cylindrical cast-iron tower with Italianate windows and a fourth-order Fresnel lens, two connected 1.5-story wood-frame keeper's houses (1876 and 1900), a brick oil house and paint locker, a garage, and a 1937 radio beacon building. A light had first been established on the point in 1828 atop the original keeper's dwelling before the present iron tower replaced it. Significant under Criteria A and C at the state level, it is prized for its role in the development of aids to navigation and for its scenic setting overlooking Vineyard Sound.
