The roadside stories worth pulling over for.

The Story

A contributing property in the South Yarmouth/Bass River Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. This large, exceptionally well-preserved village on Cape Cod's south side rose to prominence in the late 18th century through maritime industries including coastal and deep-sea shipping, whaling, shipbuilding, ropemaking, and salt and magnesia production. As those trades declined in the mid-to-late 19th century, the local economy shifted toward summer tourism. Its history also includes an unusual 18th-century role as a Native reservation and strong early-19th-century ties to the mid-Cape Quaker community. The district's character rests firmly on its fine collection of residential, institutional, and commercial buildings dating from the era of maritime prosperity.
