The Story

The building at 237-239 Main Street in the Hyannis village of Barnstable is a large, freestanding, wood-frame commercial block built in 1910 in the Queen Anne style by an unknown architect. It rises two stories to a flat roof with a narrow bracket-supported cornice; its second-story windows are generally paired with 1/1 sash, some topped by triangular pediments typical of the Queen Anne style, and a single window at the angled northwest corner is headed by a clock and may once have had a turret. The largely original storefronts feature a recessed center entry with an elegant leaded-glass transom. It is significant under Criteria A and C for its association with the development of Hyannis's Main Street commercial area and as a well-preserved, detailed early-20th-century commercial block; its survival, including its storefronts, contributes to Hyannis's character as a turn-of-the-century summer resort.
