The memorial honors Donald Baxter MacMillan (1874-1970), an Arctic explorer born in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Over a career spanning nearly half a century he led or took part in more than 30 expeditions to the Arctic, beginning with Robert Peary's 1908-09 North Pole expedition. MacMillan is remembered for his scientific surveys of Greenland and the Canadian Arctic and for his work documenting Inuit life.
