Long Point Lighthouse

Provincetown · Barnstable County

The places that make Massachusetts, Massachusetts.

The Story

The Long Point Light Station sits at the very tip of Cape Cod on the sandy spit of Long Point at the mouth of Provincetown Harbor, about a mile east of Wood End Light and completely exposed to the elements. The present square, whitewashed brick tower stands 38 feet high and dates from 1875, accompanied by a brick oil house; a warning light has marked the spot since 1827. The site was once one of the largest lighthouse complexes in Massachusetts, and Long Point supported a small settlement of about 200 people with a fishery, salt works, and windmills before the Civil War, during which two forts nicknamed Fort Useless and Fort Harmless were built nearby. The light was automated in 1952 and later converted to solar power. It is significant for its associations with the development of navigational aids in Massachusetts and was listed under the Lighthouses of Massachusetts thematic group.
