Lawrence Academy

Lawrence Academy at 20 Academy Lane in Falmouth is a handsome two-and-a-half-story, wood-frame Greek Revival temple-front building constructed in 1834, painted white, with clapboard walls, a pedimented gable, and a two-part wood bell tower; the name Lawrence Academy appears in the entablature frieze. Built as a private academy, it was purchased by the Town of Falmouth in 1891 and converted into a public high school, when the facade was reworked into a tripartite arrangement with a large central entrance; a rear addition was built in 1948. Later serving as a Legion Hall and civic meeting hall, it remains little altered and is significant for its architecture and its role in the town's educational history.
