The Story
A contributing property in the Kennedy Compound, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. Occupying about six acres of waterfront on Nantucket Sound at Hyannis Port, this compound comprises three white clapboarded frame residences typical of Cape Cod vacation homes, the largest being the home Joseph P. Kennedy enlarged after buying it in 1929. It was here that the Kennedy children spent their summers and where John F. Kennedy based his 1960 presidential campaign, with the property serving as the Summer White House in 1961. The district is significant for its central place in the family and political history of the early 1960s and in the national public consciousness of that era.
