Kelley, Mercelia Evelyn Eldridge House

The Mercelia Eldridge Kelley House at 2610 Main Street in South Chatham is a wood-frame residence built in 1877 on a brick foundation, with cedar clapboards and ornamental trim predominantly in the Italianate style (paired bracketed cornices, corner pilasters) plus a Queen Anne side porch added within about ten years of construction. It was built for Mercelia Eldridge Kelley and her husband Cyrus W. Kelley, members of the prominent local Eldridge family, which owned much of the real estate in South Chatham and was largely responsible for the area's 19th-century development. An intact example of a vernacular middle-class house, it was listed under National Register Criterion C as a well-preserved Italianate dwelling and Criterion A for its associations with the development of South Chatham and a locally important family. The architect is unknown; Thomas Ambler oversaw 2001 renovations that preserved the house's integrity.
