MassachusettsA contributing property in the Wianno Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. Laid out between Nantucket Sound and Crystal Lake with picturesquely curving roads and large lots, this district is one of three well-preserved summer resort colonies developed in Barnstable in the late 19th century. Assembled by a consortium of local, Boston and New York businessmen and promoted speculatively, it drew wealthy seasonal residents from across the eastern United States after the Civil War, centered on the grand Cotocheset House hotel (later the Wianno Club). Development was largely complete by World War I, leaving an intense and homogeneous collection of voluminous Shingle Style and Colonial Revival houses, several by Boston architect Horace Frazer, that reflect the rise of the summer resort trade as Cape Cod's leading industry.
