House at 20 Dewey Ave

Sandwich · Barnstable County

The places that make Massachusetts, Massachusetts.

The Story

A contributing property in the Jarvesville Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2010. Laid out on former farmland and salt marsh along the northeast edge of Sandwich, this district grew up as the industrial village that surrounded the Boston & Sandwich Glass Company. Most of its buildings are the modest single- and multi-family houses erected from about 1825 to 1860 to house glass-factory workers, with larger, more elaborate homes near Sandwich Center built for the works' managers. A commercial spine along Jarves Street and streets laid out in a rough grid reflect the dense, mid-19th-century company town, and marsh sites still hold traces of the glassworks' shipping canals, horse railroad, and cooperage. The district is significant as a well-preserved record of one of America's most important early glassmaking communities.
