History
This marker in Barnstable commemorates the home site of Thomas Hinckley (c. 1618-1706), the last governor of Plymouth Colony. A longtime Barnstable resident and colonial official, Hinckley became governor in 1681 following the death of Josiah Winslow and led the colony until 1692, when Plymouth was absorbed into the Province of Massachusetts Bay and its separate governorship ended. He remained in Barnstable, where he died in 1706 at about age eighty-eight.
