Hinckley, Capt. Joseph House

The Captain Joseph Hinckley House at 142 Old Stage Road in the Centerville village of Barnstable is a Greek Revival cottage built about 1850 by builder Bill Cahoon, and is one of the finest sidehall Greek Revival cottages in Centerville. Distinguishing features include a flush-board facade, full-length first-story windows, a trabeated entry surround, and a one-story front porch on fluted Doric columns, along with an unusually steep gable roof containing an extra story. It was the home of Captain Joseph Hinckley (1829-1911), who commanded the ship Village Gem and the steamships Endeavor and Providence, and the site also served as a stage stop where drivers on Old Stage Road changed horses.
