Hatch, Ruth and Robert Jr. House

The Ruth and Robert Hatch Jr. House at 309 Bound Brook Way in Wellfleet is an informal Modern-style vacation residence designed by self-taught local architect Jack Hall and built by Jean Kaeselau in 1961 for New York editor Robert Hatch, within what is now the Cape Cod National Seashore. Its innovative modular system is an open three-dimensional grid of wood posts and beams resting on a wood platform elevated on concrete piers, so the house appears to float above the bluff overlooking Cape Cod Bay. Three enclosed 'pods' set within the grid are separated by open-air corridors that frame views, and hinged plank awnings and sliding screens let the house open to the sea breeze or close against the elements. It is significant as an inventive expression of mid-20th-century Outer Cape Modernism and for its ties to the progressive community of urban intellectuals who built vacation homes in the region; it is one of only three surviving houses designed by Hall.
