Crowell - Smith House

The Crowell-Smith House (originally listed as the Crosby House) at 33 Pine Street in the Hyannis village of Barnstable is a Federal-period house built about 1775. Rising two full stories to a hip roof with uncommon rear-wall chimneys, it is a fine, little-altered example of the Federal style that differs substantially from other local examples; it is sheathed in wood shingles (possibly a 20th-century change) and extended by a 1.5-story gable-roofed rear ell, with a symmetrical five-bay facade organized around a Greek Revival entry with rectangular transom, sidelights, and lintel shelf, and 12/12 sash windows. Local histories say the house was owned by two different Captain Crosbys and served as the first parsonage of the Baptist Church on Main Street; it was moved to its present site, possibly from Main Street, and may have been the house of mid-19th-century owner Captain Augustus Crowell. The property was individually listed in 1987 as part of the Barnstable Multiple Resource Area, and its historic name was corrected to Crowell-Smith House in 2011. It is significant primarily as an unusual example of Federal-period construction with a rear-wall chimney plan (National Register Criterion C).
