The Story

A contributing property in the Harwich Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. Covering roughly 55 acres at the center of Harwich, this compact village district retains a strong concentration of 19th-century architecture, predominantly Greek Revival and Italianate with some Colonial Revival and Lombard Romanesque work. Main Street forms its spine, lined with a coherent mix of residential, commercial, and institutional buildings set among parks, open spaces, and mature foliage that lend a semi-rural feel. The district is closely tied to the town's development and to the philanthropic Brooks (formerly Broadbrooks) family, whose members gave the community its library, academy, church furnishings, and a public park.
