History

Captain A. H. Bearse bought this Main Street lot intending to build a first-class opera and moving picture house, and the Orpheum opened in June 1916 with electric lights, ventilating fans and 400 seats — Chatham's first and only cinema. Interstate Theatres bought it in 1938 and ran it as the Chatham Theater until 1987, after which the building spent two decades leased to a CVS pharmacy. A grassroots nonprofit bought it back in 2012 and reopened it in 2013 as a two-screen cinema under its original name.
