Chatham Light Station - Tower

Chatham Light Station sits on a bluff on the west side of Chatham Harbor, at the 'elbow' of Cape Cod that divides Nantucket Sound from the open sea, warning mariners of Monomoy Point and the Pollock Rip Shoals. The complex centers on an 1877 cast-iron tower, about 48 feet tall and built of five rings of overlapping iron plates with Italianate arched windows spiraling around it, together with an 1877 double keeper's house, an oil house, and later outbuildings. The tower is the surviving 'in situ' half of a pair of twin lights, its counterpart having been moved to Nauset Beach in 1923. Constructed in 1877, it is a well-maintained example of the period's cast-iron lights and is significant for its retention of the double keeper's dwelling and its association with the development of navigational aids in Massachusetts.
