Chase Park - Chatham Windmill

The Chatham Windmill is a three-story octagonal wind-powered grist mill built in 1797 by Colonel Benjamin Godfrey. Sheathed in shingles with a rotating cap and a simple grid of sail-fitted blades, it drives a stone grinding wheel on the ground floor, and much of the existing fabric is original. It served as the principal grist mill in Chatham throughout the 19th century and remained in use, despite storm damage in 1907 and 1929, into the early 20th century. In 1955 it was donated to the town by Stuart Crocker and moved from its original Stage Harbor site to Chase Park, where the town maintains it as a museum with a working miller; it is significant as one of the few surviving wind-powered grist mills in operating condition.
