Chase, Lemuel B. House

The Lemuel B. Chase House at 340 Scudder Avenue in Hyannis Port, Barnstable, is a well-preserved sidehall Greek Revival cottage built in the 1820s. The shingle-clad building has a 1 3/4-story main block and a 1 1/2-story side wing, detailed with cornerboards carrying a wide fascia with dentils; the main entry is framed by sidelights and pilasters carrying an entablature, and windows contain simple 6/6 sash. The Chase family were among the original settlers of Hyannis Port and once owned a large farm in this northern part of the village, selling off numerous woodlots over the years. Little is documented about Lemuel B. Chase except that he owned the house in the 1850s and may have been its original owner; the Chase family retained it with additional acreage until 1911. Because little is known of its history, its significance lies primarily in its architecture, and it meets National Register Criterion C as a well-preserved sidehall Greek Revival cottage.
