The Story

The Central Fire Station at 399 Main Street in Falmouth (built 1929) is a well-detailed, two-story Colonial Revival building of red brick laid in Flemish bond with cast stone and white wood trim, designed by the Fitchburg firm of Haynes & Mason. Its symmetrical facade features large segmental-arched apparatus openings, a round-arched pedestrian entrance with Doric pilasters and fanlight, and a frieze reading 'Falmouth Fire Department.' Built as the town's expanding population outgrew earlier facilities, it was the second fire station on the site and the first public building in Falmouth heated by fuel oil, incorporating an innovative storage-battery and signal system. It remains in continuous use as headquarters of the Falmouth Fire Department and meets criteria A and C.
