Brick Block

The Brick Block occupies a prominent corner lot at Main Street and Chatham Bars Road in the commercial center of Chatham. Built in 1914, this two-and-a-half-story, L-shaped Tudor Revival block is distinguished by its inventive brickwork, a deeply projecting bracketed slate roof, shed dormers, and jerkin-headed gables articulated with stickwork and free-form brick patterns. It was designed by Boston architect Harvey Bailey Alden with construction supervised by William Cox, and the virtuoso masonry was executed by master mason Joseph Nickerson, a Worcester native who had competed in national bricklaying competitions. Commissioned by a group of local businessmen called the Chatham Associates to house shops with apartments above, it originally contained the Chatham Post Office, from which it takes its historic name, and remains an important local landmark.
