This marker in Sandwich recalls the glassworks that made the town famous. In 1825 the entrepreneur Deming Jarves founded the operation that became the Boston and Sandwich Glass Company, choosing Cape Cod's Sandwich for its access to fuel and to Boston markets. The factory grew into one of America's most important glassmakers, celebrated especially for its early pressed glass produced with machinery Jarves helped pioneer, turning out vast quantities of tableware, lamps and decorative pieces. The works operated until 1888, and 'Sandwich glass' remains prized by collectors.
