Berry, Capt. James House

The Captain James Berry House is a Greek Revival, clapboard-sheathed dwelling built about 1858 in the village of West Harwich on Cape Cod, consisting of a two-and-a-half-story gable-front main block with integral ells unified by consistent classical detailing, including a fluted Doric-columned portico. It was built for James Berry (1826-1881), the first sea captain in his family and owner of seven merchant barquentines, using profits from his maritime business to house his family while he was at sea. The house sheltered seafaring members of the Berry family, including master mariner Osmyn Berry, into the 20th century and remained in continuous family use; it is significant for its association with Harwich's maritime past and as a remarkably intact, fully detailed example of the Greek Revival style.
