Bearse, Capt. Robert L. House

A contributing property in the Pleasant--School Street Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. This small, cohesive district in Hyannis consists of two parallel streets running from Main Street toward Lewis Bay and the harbor, densely developed in the mid-19th century. Nearly all of its modest Greek Revival cottages were built as dwellings by the sea captains and mariners engaged in the coastwise trade between Boston, New York, and the southern states that was so important to the development of Barnstable's southern villages. Linked by a common one-and-a-half-story scale, wood shingle and clapboard materials, and shared style and original ownership, the district thoroughly reflects Hyannis's burgeoning 19th-century maritime industries and was home to many noted captains. Its period of significance runs from its 19th-century origins into the mid-20th century (Criteria A, B, and C).
