Bearse, Capt. Asa House

The Captain Oliver Bearse House at 31 Pearl Street in Hyannis (Barnstable) is an exceptionally well-detailed side-hall Greek Revival house built around 1841, notable for rising a full two-and-a-half stories rather than the more common cottage form. Its main block has paneled corner pilasters carrying an entablature that sets off the gable as a pediment, and a side entry framed by sidelights, paneled pilasters, and a heavy lintel shelf, with 2/2 windows and a clapboard exterior behind a white picket fence. It was one of two homes owned by Captain Oliver L. Bearse, a deep-water captain from Yarmouth, who lived here from 1841 to 1850; later owners included the Bond family, who started the first commercial plumbing business on Cape Cod. It is significant primarily for the high quality of its Greek Revival design.
