The Story

The Captain Sylvester Baxter House at 156 Main Street in Hyannis (Barnstable) is described as the most fully developed example of the Italianate (Italian Villa) style in Barnstable, built in 1855. Square in plan, it rises two and a half stories to a gable roof interrupted by a facade gable and a central belvedere, is faced with a mastic finish to resemble stone, and is trimmed with brackets in the gables and stilted segmental arches over the windows; some original features, including the front porch and oriel windows, have been lost. It was the home of Captain Sylvester Baxter (1800-1861), a deep-water sea captain and prominent citizen who served as First Worshipful Master of the reorganized Fraternal Lodge of Masons, as a State Senator, and as Deputy Inspector and Collector of the Port of Hyannis. Meeting Criteria B and C, it was listed as part of the Barnstable Multiple Resource Area.
