History

This monument in Chatham commemorates the Battle of Chatham Harbor, the town's only real military action of the American Revolution. On June 20, 1782, sailors from a British privateer were caught trying to sail off with three captured local vessels; the alarm cannon on Watch Hill roused the town militia, who opened fire from shore and drove the raiders off, recovering the Chatham boats. The commemorative marker was placed in 1978 during Chatham's observance of the national Bicentennial.
