History

This statue on Main Street in Falmouth honors Katharine Lee Bates (1859-1929), the author and Wellesley College professor who was born in the town. Bates is best remembered for writing the lyrics to 'America the Beautiful,' first drafted after an 1893 visit to Pikes Peak in Colorado. She also published many books, poems, and works of social reform, and is buried at Oak Grove Cemetery in Falmouth.
