The Story

The Barnstable County Courthouse was built in 1832 of Quincy granite to a Greek Revival design by architect Alexander Parris, serving as Cape Cod's seat of justice in Barnstable Village. Its front portico and fluted Doric columns are actually wood fashioned to resemble stone; the building was enlarged several times between 1879 and 1971 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

History

The Barnstable County Courthouse at 3195 Main Street in Barnstable was built in 1831 to a Greek Revival design attributed to architect Alexander Parris. It is constructed largely of Quincy granite, though its Doric portico columns are made of wood painted to resemble stone. The building has seen several additions over the following century and stands within the Old King's Highway Historic District; it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981 and continues to serve as the county's superior courthouse.
