The Story
The Captain Seth Baker Jr. House at 35 Main Street in Hyannis is a simple 1-1/2-story vernacular dwelling built around 1850 in a transitional Federal/Greek Revival style, with a five-bay facade, central chimney and entry, and a low-pitched gable roof. It was the home of Capt. Seth Baker Jr., a deep-water sea captain who married Sophia Lovell in 1822. Its unusually humble form, especially for a sea captain, and its survival in what became a commercial district make it a well-preserved example of a traditional Cape Cod residential building.
