Baker, Benjamin Jr. House

The Benjamin Baker, Jr. House at 1579 Hyannis Road in Barnstable is a well-preserved example of a three-bay, 1 1/2-story Federal-period cottage (a half cape) built about 1828. Shingle-clad and trimmed with simple cornerboards, it has a gable roof with an offset stove chimney and an offset entry framed by pilasters and headed by a transom, with simply framed 6/6 sash windows. Benjamin Baker, Jr., a caulker, purchased the land on Hyannis Road (then Baker's Lane) from housewright John Baker of Brewster in 1826 and 1827, and the house was probably built shortly after; the Baker family were among the first settlers along this road linking Barnstable Village with the developing seaport of Hyannis. Baker died an insolvent debtor in 1840, and the property passed through several owners, including mariner Simeon Doane, Jr., who lived there until 1880. The house was listed under Criteria A and C as a social document reflecting the changing economic status of its laborer occupants and as a well-preserved simple Federal cottage.
