History

Attaquin Burial Ground was established in 1849 on Main Street in Mashpee, the historic homeland of the Mashpee Wampanoag, and is part of a local historic district. It bears the name of the Attaquin family, a prominent Wampanoag family long central to the Mashpee community, and reflects the town's identity as one of the oldest continuously self-governing Native communities in Massachusetts. Its stones record generations of the Mashpee village clustered around the nearby Old Indian Meeting House.
