History of Hampshire County
Hampshire County, incorporated in 1662, once covered all of western Massachusetts. Today it's the heart of the Pioneer Valley, with Northampton as its seat. Jonathan Edwards preached the Great Awakening from Northampton's pulpit in the 1730s and 40s, and Sojourner Truth lived in the village of Florence from the 1840s.
The county is best known for its colleges: Amherst College (1821), Mount Holyoke in South Hadley (1837), the University of Massachusetts Amherst (1863), Smith College (1871), and Hampshire College. Emily Dickinson lived and wrote in Amherst, and William Cullen Bryant grew up on the Cummington homestead that still stands in the hills to the west.
